Actinidia is a genus of vigorous, woody climbing vines best known for producing sweet, edible kiwi fruit and lush, ornamental foliage. The genus includes cold-hardy species like Actinidia arguta, which produce smooth-skinned, grape-sized fruit that can be eaten whole, as well as classic large-fruited species like Actinidia chinensis. Because these fast-growing vines develop long, twining stems and heavy fruit loads, they require sturdy trellises, pergolas, or robust orchard support systems. While some selections are self-fertile, many require both a male pollinator and a female fruiting vine to produce a successful harvest. They are exceptional additions to edible landscapes and home orchards, offering both architectural beauty and highly productive harvests.
