Annona is a diverse genus of tropical and subtropical fruit-bearing trees and large shrubs, highly prized for their exotic, unusual, and flavorful fruits. Well-known members of this genus include the soursop, sugar apple, cherimoya, and atemoya. These evergreens typically feature a naturally branching, upright growth habit with broad green foliage and distinctive, fleshy three-petaled flowers, followed by large, uniquely textured fruits with sweet or sweet-tart, creamy flesh. In the landscape, Annona trees serve as impressive focal points and are excellent choices for warm-climate orchards, backyard fruit gardens, and specialty edible landscapes. Because they are strictly tropical to subtropical, they require protection from frost and cold winds. In cooler regions outside of USDA Zones 10-12, they can be successfully grown in large containers in sunrooms or greenhouses, provided they receive consistent moisture, high humidity, and excellent drainage.
