Muntingia is a fast-growing genus of tropical fruiting plants best known for its single flagship species, Muntingia calabura, commonly referred to as the Jamaican Cherry or Strawberry Tree. This small, spreading evergreen tree features soft, slightly fuzzy, serrated green leaves that provide an attractive, gently weeping canopy. It is highly celebrated for its near-continuous production of delicate, five-petaled white blooms alongside small, round berries that ripen into vibrant shades of red or yellow. The sweet, juicy fruits boast a unique flavor profile reminiscent of cotton candy and brown sugar. Highly adaptable and exceptionally quick to fruit from a young age, Muntingia thrives in warm climates and is moderately drought-tolerant once established. It is an outstanding choice for tropical food forests, edible landscapes, and large containers in sunny outdoor spaces.
