Pellaea, commonly known as Cliff Brake or Button Fern, is a genus of small, evergreen ferns distinguished by their trailing or arching fronds and striking, geometric foliage. Unlike traditional feathery ferns, Pellaea varieties feature leathery, dark green, rounded or oblong leaflets arranged neatly along wiry stems, giving them an elegant and highly textured appearance. Remaining relatively compact at 6 to 12 inches in height, these clumping ferns are exceptionally well-suited for indoor spaces. They naturally inhabit rocky crevices and forest floors, translating perfectly into resilient houseplants, terrarium specimens, or understory accents in mild-climate shaded gardens (zones 9-11). To thrive indoors, Pellaea prefers bright, indirect light and consistently moist but well-draining soil.
