Blueberries (genus Vaccinium) are beloved perennial fruiting shrubs that offer both delicious, antioxidant-rich berries and attractive edible landscaping. Known for their spring display of delicate, bell-shaped flowers, these shrubs produce abundant summer harvests of sweet, indigo, or occasionally bright pink berries. Cultivars range from cold-hardy Northern Highbush varieties to heat-tolerant, low-chill Southern Highbush types, making it possible to grow blueberries in a wide variety of climates. In the landscape, blueberries are easy to grow but require specific conditions to thrive, most notably highly acidic, well-draining soil and consistent moisture due to their shallow root systems. Many compact and dwarf varieties also make excellent container plants, where soil pH can be easily managed.
