Zamioculcas
1 cultivar
The ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas) is a renowned rhizomatous perennial celebrated for its near-indestructible nature and striking architectural form. Its distinctive, upright stems rise gracefully from thick underground rhizomes, bearing naturally glossy, oval-shaped leaflets that look polished to a shine. Depending on the variety, new growth may emerge bright green before maturing to a deep, rich hue or even striking purplish-black tones, as seen in select dark-foliaged cultivars. Native to drought-prone regions of eastern Africa, this exceptionally hardy genus is highly adapted to store water in its robust rhizomes and succulent stems, making it incredibly tolerant of infrequent watering and general neglect. It thrives as a premier housescape and indoor foliage plant, easily adapting to a wide range of indoor lighting conditions from bright indirect sun to low-light corners. In warm, frost-free climates, Zamioculcas also makes an excellent understory or shaded patio container plant, offering lush, low-maintenance tropical structure to any setting.
